| Description | tert-Butanol is often used as a substitute for n-butanol as a solvent in coatings and pharmaceuticals; it serves as a fuel additive for internal combustion engines (to prevent carburetor icing) and as an anti-knock agent. As an intermediate in organic synthesis and an alkylating agent for producing tert-butyl compounds, it can be used to produce methyl methacrylate, tert-butylphenol, tert-butylamine, etc., and is applied in the synthesis of drugs and fragrances. The dehydration of tert-butanol yields isobutylene with a purity of 99.0% to 99.9%. tert-Butanol is an important intermediate in the production of insecticides such as buprofezin, tebufenozide, and tebufenozide, the acaricide pyridaben, and the herbicide butralin. Sodium tert-butoxide, as a significant alkoxide in the pesticide industry, is mainly used in the cyclization reactions of pyrethroids. |
