Uses: As a chiral synthesis intermediate, it is widely used in pharmaceuticals, biochemical research, and other fields. In biochemical research, it is used as a culture medium component and enzyme reaction substrate. In the pharmaceutical field, it is used as a nutritional drug or a reagent for liver function testing. It is also used to induce the expression of uncoupling proteins (UCP) in yeast and to supplement the growth of lactobacilli. In research models, chronic D-galactose administration is used to construct aging or neurodegenerative animal models.

The primary industrial synthesis method is the acid hydrolysis of lactose: Lactose is hydrolyzed in an acidic medium (such as dilute H?SO? or HCl) to produce D-galactose and D-glucose. D-Galactose is then separated and purified from D-mannose or D-glucose by precipitation with ethanol or crystallization, taking advantage of their solubility differences. (For reference only)
