Application: Furfural has a wide range of uses, mainly involving the following aspects:
Organic synthesis: As an important raw material for the synthesis of resins (such as furan resin and furfural resin), varnishes, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, rubber, and coatings.
Industrial solvents: used for selective extraction of unsaturated components in petroleum products (such as extracting aromatic components from lubricants and diesel), as well as purification of butadiene and isoprene in synthetic rubber production.
Food flavor: According to the provisions of GB 2760-96, furfural is a permitted food flavor, which is mainly used to prepare hot processed essence such as bread, butterscotch and coffee.
Analytical reagents: used for the detection of cobalt, determination of sulfates, aromatic amines, acetone, alkaloids, etc.
Other: Used for tanning leather, as a decolorizing agent for rosin, etc.

Synthesis route: Furfural is mainly produced through hydrolysis and dehydration reactions of plant fiber raw materials. Common raw materials include biomass rich in pentosans such as corn cobs, oat hulls, cottonseed hulls, sugarcane bagasse, and rice husks.
The specific industrial synthesis route usually involves the following steps:
Raw materials (such as corn cobs) are crushed and heated together with dilute acid (such as sulfuric acid).
The pentosan in the raw material is hydrolyzed into pentose, which is further dehydrated and cyclized to produce furfural.
Furfural is evaporated with water vapor, and after condensation, separation, and purification, the finished product is obtained.
Modern research has also explored more efficient catalytic oxidation routes, such as using catalysts such as TEMPO Ru BEA composite materials for selective oxidation.
